Basic customs regulations for import of household effects into india
Foreign of Indian nationals, including non-resident Indians, transferring residence to India are allowed to import their household and personal effects subject to the following conditions:
Owner must have Lived overseas for atleast two years and be transferring residence to india for atleast one year. Foreign nationals are required to have a one year work visa & residential permit
Indian national should not have stayed in India exceeding 180 days in a year and must not have availed the transfer of residence in the last three years.
Air freight shipment must be shipped within 15 days and sea freight within 30 days of owner's arrival into india. (If there is a delay in shipment, special condonation of delay can be obtained by us in some cases).
Owner must have arrived into india before customs clearance can commence.
Owner is generally required to be present for the customs examination and original passport is mandatory for the customs clearance.
Selected electronic and electrical items will be levied duty at 18.00% of customs assessed value. Other used household items will be allowed duty free. Televisions will be dutiable at 36% of customs assessed value.
Other items may not incur duty is they are used for more than one year.
